Narrowband CLC polarizers reflect circularly polarized light (right-handed or left-handed) within a tunable band of wavelengths (see figure below). For example, a right-handed CLC polarizer with a center wavelength at 630 nm will reflect 50% of normal-incident, unpolarized, red light as right-handed polarized light and will transmit 50% as left-handed polarized light. Light outside the reflection band is not affected by the polarizer.
The reflection colors are most vivid on dark backgrounds.
CLC polarizers are available as right-handed or left-handed reflective polarizers.
The position of the reflection band is tunable anywhere in the UV-Visible-near IR range.
Broadband tunable polarizers are also available. One example is a silvery polarizer that reflects one circular polarization throughout the Visible range (see figure below) and transmits the other polarization.
CLC polarizers exhibit blue-shift (color travel, OVD) of their reflection bands at large incidence angles.
CLC polymers do not absorb light and are stable at high temperatures and humidity.
CLC polarizers are fabricated either as a polymer layer between two glass substrates or as a polymer coating on a flexible PET substrate (typically, for large area applications).
OUR products
We provide custom wavelength-tuned Reflective Circular Polarizers (no absorption) on glass or on PET substrates. The reflection peak can range from 350 nm to over 2000 nm.
Narrowband CLC reflective polarizer films between glass
substrates. The top "white" square is actually a broadband
silvery CLC polarizer (see broadband spectra below).
Large size, narrowband reflective polarizer film on PET substrate.
Typical reflection spectra of four narrowband circular polarizers. Since
incident light was unpolarized, the maximum reflection is only 50%.
Transmission spectra (0% - 100%) of left-handed (LHP) and
right-handed (RHP) polarized light through a broadband LH polarizer.
